Love it or hate it your phone is quickly becoming the most important single item you own, it contains your family and friends details, pictures of Auntie Mary, video of your best mate skateboarding while drunk, access to your on-line banking, text facilities and much, much more.
Nearly all of us carry one so why not leverage it to your advantage with these helpful and nifty phone Apps. I have chosen these because they take some of the guess work out of making decisions on the fly (while out on the shore line) to increase your chance of catching by using some valuable data held on your phone.
1. Fishing Knots - Rating 4.3 - Cost Free. A really simple app which with a few tweaks (slightly more modern presentation) would be a world class app. The home page has 16 knots, including the Grinner, Nail Knot, Albright Knot and more, each with an image and and explanation of when to use the knot. Click on any knot and you will be taken to full easy to follow instructions. It is simple, yet effective and free!
2. UK Tides - Rating 3.9 - Cost Free. Seven days worth of tides tables with charts for more than 700 UK locations. This app also displays sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset times and moon phase. You can add a number of favourite locations to quickly look at the tide times for the next 7 days.A home screen widget displays the time and height of next low or high tide. Simple but effective and easy to set up, combined with decent accuracy compared to other tide apps I have tried!
3. UK Weather lite - Rating 4.4 - Cost Free. It takes its data from the Met Office, but this well presented app has a higher rating that the Met Office App??? It provides all the data you need to check the night before you go fishing or to help make decisions on the day with weather radars so you can move before the rain storms hit! There is a lot of data if you want it, but the home page widget provides a great quick overview of the weather including pressure, temp, wind with direction, guests and visibility…..
4. My Fishing Companion Lite - Rating 4.5 - Cost Free. I can imagine some of you producing a sharp intake of breath when you read the title. Yet I strongly believe that we should all keep really good and data rich records of the fish we catch and the trips we have been on. There are patterns that will stand out when you look at this data, marks that fish in precise circumstances which can be replicated and again produce fish. This app allows you to, View/Save/Edit your Fish, Gear, Locations and Trips, attach photos, video and audio clips to your data, mark fish as favorites for quick access to your lunkers, organize your Fish by Fishing Trips, add locations by map, zip code or current GPS location, lookup Weather for any location in the world, customizable Units of Measurement, share your data with others, main Dashboard gives quick access to all your latest data, import/Export your data to SDCARD and more to come.
5. Sky Map - Rating 4.7 - Cost Free. A simple but magical app to learn which stars you are looking at while watching the rod tip… You simply hold the phone up and with some modern tricks the start chart moves and tells you exactly what you are looking at. Not essential I know, but I bet you have sat on your tackle box arguing about a star or planet in the sky!
I hope you found something here of value, or maybe I have missed a really obvious and useful Android app or maybe you have used and adapted an App developed for something else to help you in your fishing, please let us all know by commenting below. If you are developing /developed a fishing App and would like it reviewed feedback please get in touch.
The fishing companion is a must.
How it is used is to stop you mind playing tricks on you like in my article:
http://www.fishing-blog.co.uk/sea-fishing-at-portishead-pier/ on this web site.
You will know instantly what and when you caught your prize blanks with this great app.
A must..

P.S
I am going to upgrade to the full version, only £1.85.
Where could you get it cheaper, certainly not at your local tackle shop in paper format!

Indeed and just wait for the new improvements….
I am really enjoying the App. Just need to get fishing more. I love the way it populates the weather including the pressure in to the catch report. I think in months or years it will help you build a valuable data base of information that will have a very positive effect on your fishing success rate.
The developer is looking in to some really exciting additions for the App. I will keep you updated when he publicly announces more of the functionality.
Hi Jamie
I have just downloaded the UK Tides app. It looks and functions more than other tide information sites.
Great App.
Just downloading the My Fishing companion. Will report back!

Delighted you like it. It is simple and well thought out in my opinion!
Hi with regards to your recent app post. 2 I have for the I-phone is the tides plan12, this is a very good app I use often that allows you to select your favourite locations giving you tide times, heights, sunrise and set times etc. Another I use is the UK Fish Size app witch gives the fish size limits off all sea fish around the UK from shore, boat and MAFF limits. Hope this is of some use.
Thanks Daz. I will do a follow up with iPhone apps, so this is some really useful feedback. The UK fish size app is very interesting, I was asked to test it a long time ago, but lost the contact details of the developer… Thanks for reminding me!
