Do you know what this fish is?

I have asked the angler to let me know where it was caught, if it is from the UK then its unusual. Have you got any idea, I would be really interested to hear your thoughts. Please comment below.

  1. Looks like a young Thornback ray mate

  2. It is a Marbled Electric Ray.
They are pretty rare in the UK and almost exclusive to the SW, they are more commonly found in the Mediterranean. The shore record for the UK is somewhere around 13lb and the boat record is about 2lb. They can give a very nasty electric shock, so the angler was lucky.

  3. That’s an interesting looking fish Graham.

If I had to take a guess I would say that it looks a bit like a baby sting ray. Seen plenty of full grown one’s but rarely seen one like that.

Would be interested to know if in fact it is.

  4. When I first looked at the photo I thought it looked like a Marbled electric ray but didn’t think they were caught in british waters. Having checked online, they apparently are caught in British waters, check out wikipedia. So that’s what I think it is, a marbled electric ray. It is found in depths of 10-30mtrs around British and Irish waters.

  5. Looks like a small sting ray
