Dawlish Warren - Devon shore fishing mark

The Warren is a sand spit across the river Exe. The main beach can be fished but you need a long cast to get you into the deeper water, the bottom is clean here. This beach used to be good for Razor fish

Fishing of the end of the spit will place your gear into the main channel. You will need heavy leads if you want to fish a static bait at this location.

The back of the warren you will fish into a shallow back water. This area has its days and has produced some great fishing but more blanks for me!

All 3 areas are good for Flounder, Dab and the odd Plaice with Bass and Mullet in the warmer months.

Crab, Squid and Worm fish well.

Went to Dawlish Warren 3rd June 2011 and spent 2 days kayak fishing, picking up a couple of Mackeral and a few Gurnard from in the bay ( only about 4-5 metres deep )…..a little dissappointed but it was nice to be out there. Went on a coastal walk the following day and watched some very large bass being caught on an outgoing tide from the estuary. Live sandeel was the chosen bait which never failed to get a hit when cast into the fast flowing water of the gullies.

That is a proven Bass method… Rapala Lures and other plugs will work well in this situation as well!!

While Kayaking did you get your end tackle well away from you, ie were you fishing 20 plus yards to one side. Even gentle hull slap (the water against the kayak) can put fish off!

Cast well away from the kayak…tried different types of lure…a small Toby being the best one on the day. Fished 100 metres or so out from Langstone.

A Dexter wedge fished like a pirk (draw and sink) can produce good results.
A small bit of bait on the Dexters can often pull somthing out of the bag!
