For thousands of years, fishing enthusiasts have been basing their trips to the ocean on the positioning of the sun and the moon. However, over the centuries, many people fishing both for the first time and the hundredth time have failed to take wind patterns into consideration. As a result, the change wind from day to day has played tricks on all of us, thus ruining what could have been a great day.

As you become more experienced when fishing, you will realize that timing is everything when it comes to the perfect tides and catching fish. Essentially, any wind going 15 or more miles per hour can ruin even the best tide oriented fishing trip. Here are the essentials to making sure the wind doesn’t take you by surprise.

Being in the right place at the right time is a difficult concept to predict. Yet, if you can understand tide patterns such as water levels, water movement and movement direction, you will have a successful day of fishing. Tidal changes, especially those influenced by windy days, can play a pivotal role, in how many fish you catch. For instance, the fish tend to move with the tide, and even the smallest gust of wind, can move a school of fish away from its normal breeding and feeding habitat.

The saltwater coastline along the Southern half of the United States has a plethora of creeks and rivers which act as a passage way to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Meaning to say, whether you are a new or more experienced fishing enthusiast, following the tide along the Southern half of the US can lead you to a wealth of game fishing opportunities.

It should be understood however, that the wind can play tricks on our minds, as a heavy wind may bring in more water to a creek or river then we may have expected. What this means, is that during the high tide, the water increases by two to five feet, bringing in baitfish, crabs, flounder and redfish. However, because the wind plays a factor in the tide being high or low, you may have fewer fish to choose from, since the wind is tricking you into believing there is more fish then what is really there. Fishing is an art!
