I find setting goals is a good way to drive forward and improve in anything, sea fishing included. The main sea angling and kayak fishing season is apporaching fast down here in cornwall, but have you set goals to strive forward.
Improve your fishing
Here are some ideas you might consider to set as goal’s
1. Select a species - rather than going on a scratching mission, choose a species and learn all about them. Where they feed, how they live etc. Immerse your self with all the facts about your chosen species and become an expert in that species. Fish, fish and then some until you manage to hook your selected species, then hone your skills.
2. Your casting range - are you finding that leads fly into the distance when you push harder, trying to reach longer distances…. not connected to your reel! Maybe investing some time and money into casting practice would be of value to you. long range casting is not the most important skill on many marks, but for some it will mean a fish when others will blank.
3. Your fishing time - Tides and weather are important, but rather than sitting on your arse get out there on a set day everyweek as long as it SAFE! I know the excuses: “it’s rainning” “the tide is low” “I can’t get fresh rag” “no peelers” the list goes on. Set a day and fish, use what ever bait you can get, Mackerel from tesco, frozen bait, bread….. You will never catch a fish from your lounge! and you might be surprised.
4. Collect bait and have a stock - Make it your goal to learn how to collect your own bait, preserve, store and harvest. This will allow you to fish when you want (see above) and will give you an understanding of the prey fish hunt out and it’s life cycle and habitat.
5. Read more books - make time to read some books about sea fishing. There are some fantastic titles out there, in fact most of the are here for you. Absorbe, re-read and learn, then put it into practice and catch more fish.
6. Try a new method - If you are a hardened beach caster try spinning. Trying new methods will allow you to again expand your knowledge and hopefully approach the sport in a new light with an open mind.
Maybe you have your own goal not mentioned here? let us know by commenting on this post, tell us where you see your angling going in the rest of 2008. It would be great to hear from you.

My main goal for 2008 is just to try and we a line more than I did in 2007! The weather is already better so things are looking good. Other than that I’d like to catch a 5lb+ Bass from the shore this year.
