Hi and welcome to my guest blog for www.fishing-blog.co.uk

After some emails back and forth, Jamie has very kindly invited me to write a guest blog to explain what I plan to be doing on my tour of the North Island in New Zealand. An exciting time for me and hopefully, good reading for you!

With a trip of a lifetime coming to fruition, I wanted my experience to be more than just a holiday. I wanted it to be something I could use to fulfil a dream, a dream of outstanding fishing in a country known, in the angling world, for its unspoilt waters and plentiful bounty. So I am just going to jump straight in and explain what my plan is.

So what’s the plan?

Well, let me fill you in.

In January myself and partner Lucy, will be exploring the South Island in our hired camper. We’ll be taking in the sights synonymous with this part of the country, big mountains, lakes, glaciers, forests and beaches. After picking up the camper in Christchurch, we will head to Milford Sound, then to the Fox Glacier, up to Able Tasman, following the coast back round to Christchurch. Hopefully catching a glimpse of whales in Kaikoura, which, all being well, will be the first of many big sea based beauties I see up close! On return to the North Island I will start my research; research that will see me take in some of the best fishing spots, boats and guides the island has to offer.

Having spent twenty plus years fishing the seas of the UK, I know how frustrating it can be. Cold, wet and what do you have to show for it? A couple of whiting and some lost gear. But at least we get to fish! All that hard work does pay off in the end, when you get to cook up your catch and sit in front of the fire, satisfied and full. Apparently though, it’s not like this all over the world! So….

I plan to travel and fish my way around the north, documenting as I go the people I meet, the places I stay and, of course, the fish I catch. Making notes for a very exciting business prospect. On my return to the UK, I will be looking at setting up fishing tours, bringing the very best the North Island has to offer into affordable and fun fishing tours. With bespoke trips, eventually being the goal.

I have been very busy contacting lodges, guides and top notch charters to get an idea of what is available in the north with some very positive responses. Many companies have shown an interest in the project, with offers of guided trips both on land and at sea in order to show me exactly what angling in New Zealand is all about.

Look out for my updates, read, enjoy and plan.
