Since the middle of the 1960s, many people have taken a liking to fishing for the legendary Kingfish. Otherwise known as the mackerel, the Kingfish is located along the western part of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. For salt water sea fishing expert looking for a new catch, here is a guide on how catch a Kingfish.
Typically, the Kingfish Mackerel is a medium sized fish, which ranges in size from five to 30 pounds. However, over the last few decades, fishing enthusiasts have reported catching Kingfish that weighed as much as 90 pounds. The Kingfish’s body is covered with loosely attached scales, and the color of the Kingfish varies from olive along the fish’s back to silver on the sides and white on its belly. Yet while these are the colors of most Mackerel, it has been reported in years past, that some of the smaller sized Kingfish Mackerel, under 10 pounds, have been known to have a combination, of yellow and brown spots on their sides.
Further, despite the color configuration of the Kingfish Mackerel, it has been confused with the bluefish. Essentially, the reason for this confusion is that similar to the bluefish, the Kingfish has very sharp closely attached teeth. Meaning to say, once caught, a fisherman searching for bluefish, could confuse it with the Kingfish because of the sharpness of their teeth.
The Kingfish Mackerel is mainly located along the western Atlantic coast, from North Carolina to Brazil. Kingfish are a finicky breed of fish, in that they will only migrate to areas where the water temperature ranges from 20 to 29 degrees Celsius. What’s more, the Kingfish tends to make its habitat close to the land between 40 to 600 foot depths close to harbors.
In terms of eating habits and fishing gear, you will have to be very particular in order to attract a Kingfish Mackerel. For instance, when it comes to eating habits, the Kingfish ranges in appetite to different genres of sardines, to their fellow Mackerel breeds, depending on how big the Kingfish it is, it may eat its own class of smaller Kingfish.
On the other hand, when it comes to fishing equipment, Kingfish Mackerel are one of the most sought after game fish in the sports fishing industry. What this means, is that you will need to troll around the Atlantic coast, using live and dead baitfish along with a net to catch multiple Kingfish Mackerel at once. When using live bait, you will need to place two hooks in the bait, one through the fish’s nose and mouth and the other through its tail. For the latter of the two hooks, this will allow you to snatch a Kingfish, as they like to bite the tails of their prey.

I really wish we had all these big gamefish in Denmark. We have lot´s of mackerels though, and if the Kingfish Mackerel fights in the same way - just 20-30 times bigger - it must be lot´s of fun.
