I managed to find the great specimen at the local fish mongers the other day and get a quick snap of it to show those unfamiliar with this monster of the deep.

Do you sea fish for Monk fish?

I guess the monk fish is not one of the most target by sea fishing with rod and line, but it sure is a popular target of the commercial netter and a species made popular in cooking in the last few decades. It’s flesh (the tail) is very rich and full of flavour with a fantastic firmness to it.

A true deep sea angler

Living mainly on the seabed, the Monk fish attracts smaller fish towards it using the “fishing rod” on it’s head which has a home made fleshy lure attached to it. Once the prey fish come near huge powerful jaws open and engulf the prey. The Monk fish is truly the deep sea angler of our waters!!
