Fishing reel
You need something easy to use and which will fit a range of fishing applications. A medium sized fixed spool reel would be ideal for lots of situations from Mullet fishing with a float, to spinning for Bass and Flounder fishing in the local Harbour. A reel of this type can also be used for light beach casting, where you might target Bass, Cod and Dog fish!
Casting with a fixed spool reel is quite easy and requires a lot less skill than a multiplier for basic casts. You should get a reasonable distance with ease and playing a fish is very straight forward with this kind of gear.
£30 – £70 is a reasonable price to pay for an angler who occasionally fishes. Make sure the reel is suitable for salt water fishing. Remember to rinse it in fresh water after each use to get the best life from the reel.
Fishing rod
When you are looking for a fishing rod, you need one with a gentle forgiving action. Balanced with the right reel you should be able to use this combo for a range of conditions and situations. A forgiving action will prevent line breaks while casting and it will give you a little more room for error when playing a fish.
A fishing rod of 10 to 12 feet would be be a good choice for a beginner to sea fishing. Shorter makes rock and pier fishing hard, with a good chance of loosing gear on the rocks, longer makes it very ungainly and hard to use for the beginner, especially when fishing amongst trees and other hazards on a estuary bank.
Balancing your rod and reel will give you better connection with the rig and fish - when you catch one! A casting weight of 1- 3 ozs is considered light 3 – 6 is moderate 4 – 8 is heavy. I would suggest starting with a light set up, and choosing conditions that allow it’s use. Fishing line
You will hear a lot about braid and new hi-tech fishing lines which out fish standard mono filament. I would suggest that Mono filimant is your best choice. Like a soft rod it stretches and allows a little room for error when casting and playing your fish.
The other important thing to remember is cheap mono has a memory - it will start to take the shape of the spool and curl into little rings! Also UV light will degrade the line, so, please change your line at least once a year. I have lost some great fish by cutting corners!!
Rigs and end gear
Good quality hooks, well tied rigs and the right type of rig or lure can make the difference when sea fishing. You need to have a small selection of rigs and lures to try to target your chosen species. Please replace your hooks on a regular basis, keep them strong and sharp!!
Some species such as flounder, like beads and attractor spoons to entice the fish to your bait. Other like the bait close to the floor, other like the bait just above the sea bed. Different rigs will present the bait in different ways so build a collection of rigs to target your species.
