I remember this day’s Bass fishing like it was yesterday, even though it was about 15 years ago.

My brother and I went to Seaton in East Devon for a spot of mullet fishing. On arriving at the mark the wind was making the Mullet fishing to hard so we decided to go Bass fishing from the shore instead.

We walked to the beach where there was an onshore 12-15knt wind blowing with a small swell running in. It was overcast as well and I remember the tide was high but it was only a moderate tide, not perfect for Bass fishing.

We used 11ft Spinning rods, 10lb maxima line and I was using an old Abu Cardinal fishing reel, my lure was an Abu Killer in blue and silver. This Bass plug is a rigid plug, diving to only 2-3 feet on a moderate retrieval.

I was fishing for about 25 to 30 mins. I would cast then retrieve the lure then take about 3 paces along the shore. My brother was ahead of me by about 20 yards and he was fishing hard like he always does when he is Bass fishing.

I cast my lure about 25 yards out against the wind and started to wind. The lure came in to about 10 to 12 yards from the beach when I saw it in the wave, I remember seeing the fin of a good size bass break the water at the foot of the wave, which was not common when Bass fishing on this mark. I lost site of my plug in white water then SMACK!!!!!!

My rod bent double and the drag started to scream, I let go of the handle on the reel to adjust the drag and I became aware that the anti reverse had stopped working. At this point my brother was running along the beach towards me. He became my drag man adjusting the drag as required to play this Bass

By this time the Bass had taken about 100 yds of line. The Bass was screaming out to sea finally deciding then to swim parallel with the beach, going left then right. The fight lasted for about 15 mins.

I finally landed the fish with a lot of help from my brother who ended up getting wet to tail the Bass. On weighing the Bass it tipped the scales at 9lb 6 oz.

That was my best ever day Bass Fishing.
