Saltwater fly fishing – Droppers and Tandams.

Saltwater fly fishing in the UK is still just bubbling under the surface with many anglers targeting species from Mullet, Bass, Mackerel, Garr and Pollock being regular targets. The problem with it is for many its not a very efficient way to fish, but here is a tip to improve your chances

Multiple flies to fish the levels

As we know fish hunt at different levels in the ocean depending on the species they are predating at that time. The tide, temperature, light levels, water clarity and ocean topography all have an effect. What you need to do is cover as many bases as possible to increase your chance.

Bass will take readily on the surface, I have had great explosive summer sport with popper plugs worked across the top. The same can be done with flies, but to increase your chances why not attach another deeper working fly to the bend of your surface fly.

Often you will attract fish to the surface, only for them to swirl away back into the depths. With another fly working those sub surface levels, you stand a greater chance of hooking into a fish. Either fly could act as the attractor with the other just clinching the deal in your favour, with a 5lb Bass being hooked!

There are a few ways of making this type of leader. The classic 3 dropper system as used primary in Scotland is one approach, but a quicker more easily achived system is the tandam. There is a great site here explaining this tandam fly system in great depth and detail.
