Further to my post about bubble floats I have remember reading in “Hooked on Bass”(a must read for Bass fishermen) about their Jif lemon rig. This used an empty jif lemon bottle filled with wax to act as a float to cast red gill and sand eel huge distances and still surface fish.

I myself tried ice cubes frozen with a swivel and kept in a wide mouth thermos. There are issues unless you are fishing the artic, but the theory was to get lures out as far a possible without an obvious weight. This ice cube idea is one I will talk about in the future as it gave me ideas for casting soft baits big distances when beach casting.

Another diy fishing float is the small soda bottles. You can easily attach a swivel to the screw cap and use an epoxy resin to seal the hole. You can then add the desired amount of water to the float and end up with a massive casting weight. I have used this with mackerel lures attached to it with great effect. Casting them great distances.

Looking into these long distance lure casting / bait casting ideas I found a very good most by Mike Thrussell where he uses power balls to act as the weight and he gets some great results when Bass fishing. The other factor with Mike’s idea is the longevity of the power ball compared to many other similar ideas. Have a read here Power Ball bassing

  2. ice cube ground bait mk 1 I blended some fish and some fresh mussel meat and poured into ice cube mold i then slid paper clips over a straw and dangled into each mold pot, on the first row i used 1 clip ,2nd row 2 clips long ,3rd row 3clips long and went fishing. when frozen solid they where great but as they warmed in my inadequte cooler they started to fail on cast .the bait cubes with 1 clip failed first then the ones with 2 and finally the 3 clip cubes. My next attempt will be to use a piece of mesh net to hold the cubes together.I caught nothing but to be fair the fishing on the Antrim coast is bad to non existent at the minute but will let you know how the mk2 cubes work

  3. Neat internet site:) hope to come back!
