River black with Fish

Indexed under Angling latest

I went for a walk today along the river Cober, in Helston. I was amazed at the sight I saw.

The river was black with fish for an area about 40 feet long. It looked like I was looking into a stock pool at a trout fishery.

There were a few of what looked like Perch amongst the Trout but I am not sure why they are gathering like this at this time of year. I thought that most spawning was done in the spring. Have you got any ideas? let us know please………………

Haqving been back down a few times they are indeed Roach with Perch mixed in.

I spent about 2 hrs down there watching them all. I wouldn’t like to estimate how many there were. I tried to take a few photos but sadly it did not come out well even with a poloroid lens.

Thank you very much for posting the reply you have.

What happens this time of the year with coarse fish.Is that when the temperature starts to drop, they shoal up and start to look for deeper water. On the deeper lakes like Wheal Grey in Ashton, this will happen later on,because the volume of water is far greater than that of the Cobar.

I am not sure, but it could be more likely that they came from Loe pool,as the Helston[Cober] end is the shallow end, thus will cool down quicker than the deeper middle and beach end. This time of the year lakes/pond fishing go very quiet, yet the river fishing is better.Perhaps the temperature in running water is more consistant then the thermoclines[layers] in lakes.
At the weekend I had great difficulty locating and catching small roach/rudd/perch at Porth resevior for pike/perch live bait.As soon as I had a few and put a small roach out on a float,I had an inastant take with a 3lb perch.
Loe bar pool intrigues me.There is not much local information on the water, apart from the legendary hybrid sea/brown trout that Helston residents can get a permit to fly fish for.
I go and spin with mepps spinner/telescopic rod and have caught the trout,no great size, and also had perch of over 1lb.I have seen bubbling which is a sign of carp/bream/tench,but because no one is allowed to fish for them the lake holds a great mystery to me.May be I might pre-bait a descreet spot next summer and have a go,see whats in there.
