Welcome to the Sea fishing blog

We cover popular sea fishing techniques including, Mullet fishing, Bass fishing, Kayak fishing, Beach casting, Marks and a beginners section.

Our latest sea fishing articles are below. Check out more content using the navigation on the right-hand side...

Seaton Devon - Sea angling Mark

Seaton is located on the eastern edge of Devon, on it south coast. Home to the mouth of the river Axe, there is good fishing for a range of species.

Mullet can be caught in the river. Generally people fish the seaward side of the last road bridge. The access is good and the fishing is easy from the quay side. Ground bait heavily and get fishing. Landing your catch can be a challenge and you need to keep an eye out for moving boats. This mark fishes well on the rising tide.

Flounder are caught the other side of the road bridge. Crab and rag are the preferred baits. Fish the tide up. This is not a renowned Flounder mark, but it does produce fish. School Bass are caught here as well, but please release any under size fish!!

Off the river mouth Bass can be caught with Plug and bait. Consider the conditions and fish the flow. This mark can be very productive for Bass. Pollock can be caught when the light levels start to fall.

The beach has produced some good fish over time. There are a few HOT spots along the beach. Use you knowledge looking for out crops of rock and possible gullies at low tide to find the areas.

Parking is good for most areas. Seaton is a small seaside town so Anglers food is easy to find. There is an angling shop. Toilets are dotted around the town.

Fishing marks

I have added a new category for Sea fishing shore marks.

I have great knowledge of marks in Devon, Cornwall, The Isle of Man and Dorset so that’s where I will start. However when it comes to the rest of the country, I am starting to struggle.

Ramsgate, Dover, Sea Brook, Fleetwood, The Tyne, Whitby, Lowestoft are all areas I hear of but know little about so I will have to research them unless you can write them for me and have a chance of winning the £40 on offer on the fishing-blog competition.

This feature will add a great new dimension to this fishing blog and I hope it will help some of its 100 200 300 daily users.

I also plan on adding more video venue guides like this one at Loe Bar in Cornwall

The future

The focus of the blog is also turning more and more towards Sea angling and its many facets, so I feel that some of the coarse fishing and carp fishing articles will take a back seat for a while.

Kayak fishing is taking off in the UK and our users of the site seem to indulge many hours in the kayak fishing section here on the Fishing blog, so there will be a focus on bringing more information forward regarding this method of sea angling.

I have written here about the reasons for trying Kayak fishing

Bass live bait

I have had further discussions about the best Bass live bait with a few Devon and Cornwall Bass fishermen.

It seems that the current preferred bait has to be the live prawn. There are many ways as I have discussed before on how to catch these animals so I won’t go into much detail on this post about the methods and techniques used.

Leader length

To confirm my own thoughts on this subject when inshore drifting for Bass a long leader of fluro carbon or similar low vis material seems to be the best option. When I say long I mean about 10’ or as long as you can handle, if this is greater that 10’ then all the better.

Bass rods and Reels

The rods being used are generally about 8 – 10 ft spinning rods with fixed spool reels. The Shimano bait runner was a popular choice. The advantage of light weight rods is two fold, they make the fight more sporting and they show bites, including slack line bites more noticeable. (I will talk about slack line bites another day)

Bass Live Bait

The bait is kept alive in some form of aerated bait container. This can include a bucket fitted with a bait pump or a basket dipping the water attached to the side of the boat. There are many options available to you on the market these days.

Bait presentation for Bass

The most popular hooking method employed seems to be a treble with one of the hooks passing through the tail of the beast so it still looks lively and the prawn survives being hooked. This gives a very natural bait presentation which is important for clear water Bass fishing. A bubble float is often used to stop the bait swimming down and hiding in the rocks. The float would be attached at the end of the main line / start of the leader.

Bass Bites

The bite when fishing this method is often very strong and positive, however slack line bite can occur. Always allow the Bass a bit of time with its bait, giving it time to mouth the bait, then just wind into the fish, don’t be to concerned to strike.

In conclusion

This is not the only Bass fishing Live bait, but its one that seems to be very popular at the moment and it seems to be out fishing more of the usual techniques like Joey mackerel and the traditional live sand eel.

Welsh Carp fishing comp

Indexed under Angling latest

I have fished a few Sea angling Comps in my time and I won the Belmullet Sea Angling Club 1996 Out of State Section for the greatest Varity ( I will show you a pic of the trophey one day and tell you more about my comp fishing) but I am digressing…

Have a read below and visit the link, this is a prise for 20K and coverage on SKY tv

WALES is to establish itself as a major draw for anglers with a new fishing tournament boasting a televised final.

The Wales Carp Fishing Championships will culminate with a final in September after heats at five locations beginning in April. Organisers have secured a deal with Sky TV and tourism bosses are confident the publicity will provide a major boost to the country’s already booming leisure fishing industry.

The competition will attract world-class anglers, with a first prize of £10,001, and total prizes of £20,001. Read more here

Good luck to those who get involved. I would love to hear from some of you

Rag worm or Lug Worm

Which do you prefer Rag worm or Lug worm ?

I have a few friends here in Cornwall who swear by lug worm. They will only fish with that bait and they get some great results, especially for Bass off surf beaches. They also spend almost as much time digging bait as fishing.

I tend to follow the more common law of Lug worm in the winter and rag worm in the summer. I guess this maybe because Cod tend to prefer Lug and of course Cod are generally for us southerners a winter species, so that may be the reason behind my preference.

Summer is great though, Rag worm lowered along side a rocky outcrop or your local pier as the tide gets high and the light is dropping can often select a table size Pollock. Mepps spinners tipped with Rag worm can induce a take from Mullet, free lined rag over rocky ground can take all sorts of fish, as well as beach casting with Rag worm.

I would be interested in your thoughts and opinions on this one

Rag worm or Lug worm ??

The greatest fishing site ever

I must share the greatest fishing site I have ever found ,

I quote

Bass

Probably the most sought after sea fish in England, Bass are big (sometimes), and silver (always), and greedy (at tea-time). Young Bass are known as School Bass until they graduate and become qualified Bass.

Bass like places where there are a lot of critters such as crabs, worms, baby other fish etc… Local anglers are usually quite cagey as to the exact locations of good marks, therefore the best places to go are often rocky, weedy, shallow and secret.

Cod

Cod are primarily a deep sea fish from the North, you can tell this by their strange accent and the way that they tend to stare at you. The best time to catch Cod is when it’s cold enough to freeze your bogies, the cold weather draws them closer to the shore at certain points usually where the beach looks out onto deep ocean water. A good ocean facing beach is Chesil Beach in Dorset although they do often appear off other beaches by mistake.

kayak accessory

I would like to know what you think is the most important Kayak accessory.

I would like to build this list to help those out there who are considering getting into the sport of kayak fishing but do not know which kayak accessory to spend their hard earned money on.

There is so much on the market these days which is meant to “save time” and “save effort” but what are the really good bits of kit out there on the market.

I have seen silicon spray to enhance the life span of your yak. Multi adjustable clip on / clip off rod holders, carry straps, Fish finders, G.P.S, live bait boxes, storage shelters you name it the list is endless.

Please just tell everyone via adding a comment to this post the most important bit of kit you can get and why.

I will start and safety should always be the first but I will suggest a bit of kit that you use before you get to the sea!

  1. Wheels – Kayak accessory wheels have made my life a pleasure! You can load your yak up at home, wheel it to the car and unload everything. At the beach all your tackle can be put in place, cag, BA, everything and then you just wheel your YAK down to the shore line.

Vision koma - salt water fly fishing reel

I have invested in a Vision Koma for my salt water fly fishing.

It has a great drag, really accurate and the control knob is of a good size so easily adjusted with cold hands!!

For a value for money large arbor reel you cannot beat this in my opinion as it comes with a free spare spool. Due to its diameter it should relive line coil allowing longer more accurate casting.

Having spoken to the supplier they state if its well rinsed it should not be a problem to use this for saltwater applications.

Here is what they say about the reel

A True Large Arbour featuring a powerful drag system with unparalleled smoothness in a beautiful lightweight Aluminium structure.
A blazing retrieve rate and generous line capacity ensure you have the upper hand in any situation. Anodised to a lustrous Titanium finish, this reel not only looks the part but also will out perform any other reel in its category. Di-cast and Machined technology. Lightweight, full Aluminium construction. Micro-adjustable progressive drag. Silent retrieve. Quick change spool runs on sealed bearings.
Easy left/ right hand conversion. Soft PU handle.
