Kayak fishing Cornwall – Bass no Bream
Despite the very strong winds and heavy rain I managed to go Kayak fishing today. I chose a sheltered spot out of the weather in a local estuary hoping for a Bream. I took with me 30 lug worm for bait as I have heard they are fishing better than Crab in the local area (I never do well on Crab at the best of times)
I got to the water at about ½ an hour before low tide. There were loads of Mullet waiting for the tide to flood and I knew there would be school Bass amongst them but I hoped there would also be some Bream. You can see from this photo the swirls of fish, what you cannot see are hundreds of bait fish exploding from the water in their panicked state to get away from their predator.
I positioned my self right on the line where the flooding tide met the fresh water coming from the estuary. I was using my bait caster rod and a running ledger, through a light ball bullet lead finished with a size 1 Carp hook (the carp hooks are design to be small but very strong) baited with a partially threaded lug worm. A short cast of 15 – 20 feet put the bait just where I wanted it.
I had some of the best sport with school Bass, everyone was carefully unhooked and returned I must have reached double figures with these beautifully formed fish as I followed the tide up the estuary. Sadly there were no Bream for me and the wind and rain increased to really heavy levels which shortened my trip.
On the way back to my launch spot there was a fella beach casting. On speaking to him he was also after Bream, using Crab as bait. This man complained about the amount of weed he was picking up and the fact that he had not had a touch on this mark. At least I was not the only one!!
