The summer is almost here and holidays will soon be upon us and it’s time to buy your kayak. So if you are one of the lucky ones thinking of buying a fishing kayak you should firstly make sure you have read the following posts.
Big game prowler fully rigged – Well worth a look!!!
Then, by commenting on this post, let us know your findings and decisions you have made, so we can all learn from each other.
We all have different requirements: Size, our weight, max length, stability, speed, family and friends etc but we could help each other by sharing our research.
If you own a kayak and would be happy to let others have a paddle to try it out then also let us know, tell us where you live! I have a RTM Disco if anyone wants a paddle. I am based Nr. Helston, Cornwall.
Any really helpfull comments might be made into standalone articles here at the fishing blog.

Well I am a big guy so a light kayak was a no go and it took me a hell of a lot of research to find the one I felt was right… Moken 12 from Feel free.
This has a good capaciy and a nice shape to cut the water while being wide enough to be a stable fishing platform, I must confess I would have liked a little more beam conpared to the more popular ocean kayak prowlers etc but this was only £500 new and even has a robust wheel in the keel saving the hassle of buying and fitting a trolly.
Another large appeal to me was the front covered hatch which screams fish hold to me, there are scuppers in there too to keep your catch fresh but enclosed… not sure yet if this will be it’s use as I don’t know if it will make my new yak manky.
I have nearly got all my stuff together now and it will not be long until I get the first paddle in but I have big plans for the future and have already designed the rudder system I will make.
One more thing to note is that she is not light so unless you are strong or have a friend / lift to help, you may struggle to load it onto your roof. I manage fine but many reviews state this. There is plenty of foot room and adjustment of the foot pedals too with one waterproof hatch between your legs in front of a lift up console.
Hope this helps people and feel free (no pun intended) to ask me if you want any info
Cool Beanz….
Sounds like you are well hooked on Yak fishing. Would love to hear how you get on with it in the future and any mods you make.
I really miss my Yak and cannot wait to be in a position to get another.
Hi guys and girls
I recently bought a sea fishing kayak and all the ‘trimmings’ for about £1,000. I worked hard mainly in e-bay but I’m on the water and safe! I wanted to tell others that you can do this too by shopping around and being innovative. To give you some idea of the kit and ideas here goes;
Two man fishing Kayak by winner, with 4 Rod holders, 2 seats, 2 paddles and a dry bag delivered for £480 new from ebay dealer.
Heavy duty trolley and securing strap new from ebay about £40 delivered.
Second hand dry suit – tailor made Kokatat as used by American Coastal services (cost new £1K) bought for £250 second hand (bargain and boy does it work not a single leak and it breathes beautifully).
Self made stabiliser system using small new aluminium ladder (ebay £20) and two boat fenders (second hand ebay £50) enables stand up fishing.
New marine hand held Cobra radio £50 (ebay).
Small anchor new (£8 ebay)
50m rope new (£10 ebay)
Two new kayak fishing rods from shop in Gower (£10 each).
5 new kayak leashes (£10 app on ebay).
4 new luggage straps for stabiliser system (£6 ebay)
Pair of ladder clamps for roof rack (innovative?) (£30 at Wickes) you can clamp the kayak through the bung holes and padlock it onto the roof!!!
Drogue, new (£15 on e-bay).
All the kit was tested last weekend in Mumbles and I am pleased it all went well.
The prices are not exact on the smaller items but pretty close – I’m now going to work on an electric motor and a leisure battery but I might have to give the credit card a rest! I’m going to get a waterproof floating cover for the radio but in essence I have got out there with all the kit I can think of and looking forward to both bass and trout fishing from a safe kayak!!
