Kayak Hatches

First thing to remember is to make sure your Kayak hatch is secure before you go on the water.

Secondly they can be adapted for use as storage areas, both dry and wet (for fishing bait). The shape and design of hatch depends largely on the make and model of Kayak you have, however most are circular in shape.

If you want to add a custom hatch it must be done correctly, ensuring that the strength is kept in the area the hatch is added and it’s a watertight finish. If you are at all concerned about your tradesman ship then get somebody to install it for you.

Some of the best devices I have seen are a bait bucket that looks like a hatch, with a screw lid and a hatch that contains a bag. I have yet to source these in the UK, but I will keep you informed as and when I do.

I won’t try to explain how to fit a hatch because this site has already done a great job at anglers afloat. There are all sorts of customisations there for you to see!

The most simple storage you can add is a dry barrel. These are simply a barrel that you strap to the kayak. The advantage I see is that you do not effect any warranty and you can strip your kayak down if you just want a basic boat for surfing and fun boating. Here are a few design of waterproof barrel for you to see.

Sennen Cove - Cornish shore mark

Sennen Cove is situated only a few miles from Lands End, you can have easy access to a great surf beach and a harbour.

There is the usual fishing available from Sennen Cove pier, Wrasse, Pollock and possible Bass.

Sennen beach is one of the best Bass beaches in the area. Most people I talk to say ledgered Lug worm is the way to go, but Sand eels also fish well.

The beach again has large numbers of holiday makers, so consider your times of fishing.

There a stromg rip tides so use caution if wading
