Generally the term is for fly fishing where you use a heavy castable line, where the leader is a length of mono filament leading to the fly.
The length of the leader is normally 4ft+ depending on the conditions and your ability. The longer the better generally.
A tipit is where you use a braided leader which gets lighter towards the end finishing in a short length of mono filament – the tipit.
Breaking strength of a leader or tipit depends on the size of the fish, the location and the type of angling. Try to fish as light as possible without loosing to much end tackle.
