Corus Sea fishing

The “Short Arm” belongs to Corus Steel in Port Talbot is accessed by permit only. I understand the current cost is £27.50 for the short arm and £46 for the long arm. Permits are available via 08706 096699 for the short arm and 01639 871111 est 3368 which is the British Steel Sports Club.

Both sea fishing marks are breakwaters and offer comfortable fishing venues. Lure fishing, float and bottom fishing techniques work well here for a range of sea fishing species.

Corus species

Summer species include, Bass, Mackerel, Garfish, Pollack, Wrasse, Mullet, Dogfish, with flatties, conger eels and Ray making an occasional appearance, winter species include Dogfish, Pouting and Whiting.

Like many pier marks anything is possible, so fish hard!

Bait & Fishing methods

The ground a short distance out is clean and all methods work well. Frozen Mackerel / Squid work well for the Rays, Conger, Bass and Doggies. Worm and Sand Eel will produce flatties and Bass. Bread and fish mix for Mullet on light float gear. Lug works well in the winter months!

Ogmore Deeps shore fishing

A very popular shore fishing mark on the South Wales coast line. The ground is made up of rock ledges leading out to sand and deep water about 50 meters from the shore, although there are rocks and reefs everywhere. The mark can be dangerous in large swells and pay particular attention on high tides.

Ogmore deeps species

Winter brings in whiting, pouting and codling. There are some great Cod caught from this beach each year!!

Spring will start to see catches of thornback, blonde and small eyed rays with summer giving the odd garfish and mackerel, bass, dogfish and the odd smoothound. Conger also get caught here.

Baits and Rigs

Simple rigs like pulley rigs are great for this kind of mark.

Fish baits and rag worm will take most species and try lug for the winter species. Sand eel often helps select the rays.

Mumbles Pier, in Sawnsea fishes well for in the Summer months for bass, garfish, mackerel, plaice, mullet and trigger fish. In winter it offers whiting, dabs, flounder, codling, and dogfish.

Close to the pier works best for the trigger fish. Crab of Mackerel fished on a Aberdeen size 1 hook on a long trace to allowing it to move in the tide.

Mullet will be taken on bread flakes or fish and bread mash. A little extra fish oil will get the scent trails stronger and lasting longer to attract the fish.

Bass are regularly taken on float tackle, with a sand eel fished underneath. This will also pick up mackerel and gar.

Winter fishing for cod is best with squid and lug cocktails.

Techniques employed are beach casting, float fishing and spinning. I would suggest it would be worth ago with a fly rod on still warm mornings and evenings.

Plaice, Dabs and Wrasse can be taken when bottom fishing. The usual peir species can also be taken on float gear, including small pollock, gars, mackerel.

The Mullet fishing can be superb at this location. I have also seen it so full with non feeding fish you could have almost walked across them. The typical method is plenty of ground bait, light float tackle baited with mackerel skin or bread. Early risers should catch the most!!

The Warren is a sand spit across the river Exe. The main beach can be fished but you need a long cast to get you into the deeper water, the bottom is clean here. This beach used to be good for Razor fish

Fishing of the end of the spit will place your gear into the main channel. You will need heavy leads if you want to fish a static bait at this location.

The back of the warren you will fish into a shallow back water. This area has its days and has produced some great fishing but more blanks for me!

All 3 areas are good for Flounder, Dab and the odd Plaice with Bass and Mullet in the warmer months.

Crab, Squid and Worm fish well.

I have fished this location numerous times, it an interesting location with large pinnacles of red rock standing in the sea. Good size wrasse come in from this beach with Dogfish and the odd nice Bass. Baits are the normal Worm, Sand Eel and squid.

In the summer it’s a very popular beach and hard to fish during daylight hours.

There are other little beaches along the shoreline which get cut off at high tide. Worth taking your kayak along and fishing close to the foot of the cliff.

This steep shingle beach has never stood out as one of the best marks. The left side is very rough and produces the usual species if you are prepared to loose some tackle. The right side is rough also but not normally as productive as the left. Worm, Crab and Squid all fish well.

Interestingly, Beer is located amongst some prime Bass fishing ground. I would suggest it would make a great place to Kayak fish from!

Species caught here range from Bass, Ray, Plaice and Dogfish and you can use most methods from different areas of the beach.

I have spent a lot of time spinning from the beach and find that dusk and dawn produce the best catches.

This is a popular holiday time beach, so bear that in mind.

This long strip of sand runs from Marazion across St Michael mount to Penzance. The Penzance end has some tunnels running under the railway line and fresh water comes out of them attracting all sorts to the beach, especially good for Bass. Towards the Marazion end of the beach the ground becomes a bit more broken and it looks very tempting.

The beach holds Sand eel and Lug worm and these are the favourite baits for this area. Species caught include Bass, flat fish, and Dog fish.

This is a mark I have not fished. I understand you need to park on the road side and walk down to the cove. The best mark is apparently along the coastal path to the right hand side of the beach where you should find a group of flat rocks to fish from.

The mark is good for Pollock and Wrasse and the rough ground after dark produces Conger and Rockling.

One of the most talked about fishing marks in West Cornwall and one I have fished a few times and intend kayak fishing next season.

This is the location of the renowned Minack Theatre, carved from the granite!

If you park in the beach car park and head out on the cliff path you will see a few areas that can be fished from. The mark at the far end seems to go into deeper water and produces the best mackerel fishing. All the other marks can produce a whole range of species including, Pollock, Wrasse, Turbot, Gurnard and Bass.

I have found the mid section to produce more Bass for some reason.
