Mono line tends to lose its breaking strength if it is exposed to heat for a long time. Changing your fishing line every season like you said is highly recommended, and the lit cigarette thing, I am a smoker and I have lost a fish online before from fighting the fish while smoking a cigarette, and intoxicated. My advice if you smoke while you are fishing is, if you have a fish on, throw the damn cigarette out !!
